Chapter Ten

The Final Battle of the Sages

“And after much searching shall the answer be made clear.

And hope’s quest shall not be made in vain.”

Epistle of Jonathan, 3:6

Jeremy rubbed the back of his head and groaned. He thought briefly about how he’d spent more of his time since waking up in Coontan asleep or unconscious than he had awake and laughed slightly at the irony of it. Then he remembered the battle that had been going on before he fell. He got up as quickly as he could, sword at the ready.

His eyes darted in all directions, taking in his surroundings. He was in some sort of cave. There was a recently-lit fire at his feet, and strange markings all over the walls. He frowned. He didn’t remember being in a cave when he went to sleep. In fact, there hadn’t even been any caves nearby.

“Are you alright, Master?” a strange voice asked from behind. It was shrill and almost bird-like. It was unlike any voice he’d heard before.

He turned to face the voice and found it to be that of a giant gryphon. Not the one that had attacked him earlier. That one had had black feathers and a tarnished beak, while this one had graying feathers and a golden beak. Perhaps that meant it was older and wiser. For a moment, he thought to slash away at this gryphon anyway, but he didn’t sense any malice coming from it. He thought it best to wait and see what transpired.

“Master?” it asked again in a more hesitant tone.

Jeremy shook his head. “I’m not your master.”

The beast looked confused, or possibly disappointed. “You are not the Jheriem whose coming has been foretold for generations?”

He shook his head again. “No, sir. I’m just a man trying to do the right thing.”

The gryphon tilted its head and looked at Jeremy more intently. “If you insist, Master. It must be my mistake.”

Jeremy wasn’t sure what the beast was going on about, but at least this one didn’t seem to want to kill him. He figured he could use that to his advantage to get caught up on what happened while he was out and the whereabouts of his team. “I’m just glad you don’t want to eat me,” he said with a slight chuckle.

The gryphon reeled back a bit and bowed its head in what looked like a gesture of humility. “Ah. That. Allow me to apologize for my younger brethren. They mistook your group for common intruders and acted with haste unbecoming of our kind. Sadly, that served as its own punishment, as the younglings were killed before I could put a stop to things. Rest assured it won’t happen again.”

Jeremy suddenly felt a little sad for the creature. He could tell it was upset over the loss of his ‘brethren,’ but was somehow too ashamed to admit it or seek any sort of reciprocity. “Um. Apology accepted, I guess.”

The gryphon gave what looked like a deep bow.

He put out his hand in front of him to beg the beast to get up.
